This is the senses-shattering conclusion to our series on “The Greatest Writers In Comics.” We discuss canceled people, low-key right-wingers, idea guys, and luminaries…some of these writers are all of these things at once. We get into the business of comics writing and cover some of the people who have decided that “working for the man” i.e. the Big 2 isn’t for them. Or they use the Big 2 (Marvel and DC) to get a name and make their own empires elsewhere. Are comics the best way to become a ‘creative’? Are business success and accessible stories the truest indicator of skill? “The Greatest Writers in Comics” (Part One) MOSTLY concerns people who work for “the big 2” meaning Marvel and DC, however within that framework we will discuss everyone from iconoclasts to “jobbers” as the Cartoonist Kayfabe guys say. There are also people who can do both superhero AND independent “mature” work with equal aplomb. We will speak with some nuance about what these men and women accomplished in the formative years of comics, building the giant shoulders on which contemporary comics stand. We try to determine exactly what constitutes the beginning of “modern” comics and what qualifies as an actual evolution or revolution in comics. Dig in cuz part one’s a whole meal, but just know there’s much more to come!

“The Greatest Pet Peeves In Pop Culture” is our attempt to discuss the tropes and trends that Ed, Ron, and Bill dislike the most in pop culture. Can we stop shooting everything from diner scenes to space battles in the same four by five area against a greenscreen? Can we stop the generic superhero origin story with no twists? Can characters in movies stop obsessively mentioning other movies? Can writers stop using dialogue to lampshade weak plots and cliche situations? This episode also takes modern audiences to task. We lampoon criticism that doesn’t give any thought to context. We talk about how neo-puritanical nerds and hand wringing ninnies are bad for movies but so also are the “antiwoke” grifters and cinematic conspiracy theorists that have infiltrated media about media. This one is fun and turns into a very serious conversation about the internet generation’s relationship to art.

“The Greatest Future For Movies” is about what it takes to get people back into the movie theater now and in the near future. The crew asks what drives people to movies now and what will it take in the future. Will it be spectacle, intellectual properties, or concepts and stories (ha) that get people into the theater? Notice how we didn’t say movie stars. We’ve debated before whether they actually exist anymore. But maybe the problem is that the type of movies that make movie stars don’t exist anymore either. The whole subject is ripe for discussion in the wake of this Barbenheimer, Fast X, Mission Impossible, Ninja Turtle summer.

“The Greatest Cinematic Experience” means different things to different people. To some it’s a stirring script, others it’s innovative direction, and then there’s the people who simply love certain actors. We, Bill and Ed, tend to think it’s a mix of all three and some other things like practical effects, a sense of scope, and a main character that doesn’t necessarily have to break the mold. Obviously these are our personal choices and ourr favorite films tend to be somewhat modern and American, however,after listening to this conversation you’ll know what we mean when we say something is cinematic. The conversation is instructive and funny AND at the end we read a brand new 5 Star REVIEW!!!!

Of course, there’s some movie talk too but we really tried to respect the opportunities and limitations of comics as the basis of this conversation. Mary Jane and Spider-Man, Reed and Sue, Big Barda and Mr. Miracle, Dick and Babs, Dick and Kory, Supes and Lois, Scott and Jean, Wolvie and Jean, Storm, and Forge…look there’s a fair amount of X-Men talk because they were one of the greatest soap operas in comics for Claremont’s whole run.
