Filmmaker and critic Robert Butler III joins us to talk about how the Movie Theater is “The Greatest Escape” in his opinion. We talk about his well-spent youth theater hopping and basking for hours in the glow of that silver screen. For those thinking about going to film school as Robert did, he talks about his unique experience going to USC on a scholarship from BILL GATES and how he broke in working with Schmoes Know and Collider.
We tell stories of our most memorable theater experiences of all time and we dip our toe into the debate about the home vs movie theater experience of watching films.

We have a little fun on this one as we chat with comedian, actor, and writer Gil Garibaldo about The Greatest LA Movies. We pick some of the greatest and some of the most ridiculous films where the city of Los Angeles is a “prominent character”. So no, not all of the films we discuss in this recording are “great” per se BUT every single one is fun to discuss and shows our comedic sensibilities. And almost none of them are too obvious so don’t spaz out if we don’t mention “Beverly Hills Cop”, or “The Player” or “Short Cuts.”
Oh and we picked movies filmed within our lifetimes, so lay off us if damn “Sunset Blvd.” and “Chinatown” aren’t on our lists, bub!

Blockbuster screenwriter Josh Miller drops by to hang out and talk about “The Greatest Thing About Video Stores”. It’s more than nostalgia but it is that too. We discuss the lost culture that was video stores. And no we’re not just talking about Blockbuster. We’re talking about VIDEO STORES. Sometimes they’d have that beaded curtain, sometimes the people that worked there were movie savants, sometimes you got there right in time to snag that Kung Fu movie that Wu-Tang sampled. We talk about video store CULTURE. There’s also some good talk about Friday the 13th and the basics of horror branding which leads nicely into an interview section where we get some insight on writing movies from someone thriving in present-day Hollywood. We ask “who gets to decide what’s an appropriate reaction when someone screws with your childhood characters?” The answer is us of course*! In this one, we talk about diversity in comics & media. What does that word even mean? Is it a philosophy or a business tactic? If it is a business tactic is that wrong? What is “pandering?” Does it exist? There’s a low-key civil war in comics right now over the future of the medium and I guess in this one we pick a side. Although I kinda think we blow up everybody and start a new country. But you listen and be the judge. There’s also a discussion about how the work-for-hire rates publishers pay creators might be influencing how many many “diverse” characters will ever be in “BIG 2 Comics”. This is a frank, often profane discussion. It’s not a collection of talking points or just Twitter come to life. It’s a real conversation that needed to be had. Enjoy!
Correction: In this episode, Ed goes on a rant and he forgets that Ivan Reis drew Cyborg for a second. *That totally invalidates the observation he was making.*
