The Greatest: Daredevil or The Punisher

In this discussion, Ed and Ron ask, who is “The Greatest: Daredevil or The Punisher?” Now there are obviously fans and detractors of each of these street-level vigilantes. Some may think they’ve heard every talking point about each of them, but when you have a superfan like Ed trying to explain why he basically likes them both equally it gets deep. This becomes a discussion of comic book psychology and its effects on real-life people. It’s a common theory that these two characters are almost like Rorschach tests for your morals and interests...but what if it was more complicated than that? What if these characters need each other to truly be interesting? What if they are sort of a codependent dyad that form the street-level Marvel universe? Listen with an open mind and enjoy.

The Greatest: Spielberg or Scorsese

It’s the Eyebrows vs. the Glasses, the blockbuster pioneer vs. the street cineaste as we try to decide, who is “The Greatest: Spielberg or Scorsese?” The discussion of these two titans crashed my damn computer making this podcast late getting to you but on the bright side, you get a genre-spanning, at times contentious discussion that’s nearly twice as long as a normal episode. Are The Eternals The Greatest Misfire of the MCU?

“Are The Eternals The Greatest Misfire of the MCU?” It’s certainly in question and this week, we have comedian/musician Jeffrey Baldinger join in to help us get to the bottom of it. The first half is NO SPOILERS so feel free to listen even if you haven’t seen the movie yet. The King Jack Kirby’s Eternals and The 4th World DC stuff were always your dad’s weird friend’s favorite comics and now they’ve made their way to the big screen. Their esoteric concepts and sci-fi god mythos have always thrown most fans for a loop so it’s no wonder this movie has been doubted since its inception. Will Oscar-Winner Chloe Zhao’s voice blend with Jack Kirby’s and Marvel’s brain trust to make another hit, or will it go down as an oddity amongst other more commercial properties? Why not both?

Finally, The Greatest Pod tackles the essential millennial question. Who’s “The Greatest : Stallone or Schwarzenegger?” Producer Bill is the referee while Ed and Ron fight it out.  It’s a wonderfully silly argument that tells us just as much about ourselves as either of the subjects. This one’s bound to ruffle some feathers especially if you’re some psycho who doesn’t like either of them or you’re a stan for one over the other. Is Quentin Tarantino the Greatest

This is one of the frankest discussions about Tarantino that you’re likely to hear. We discuss the cult of personality around him as much as we do his talent. His movies struck a chord in the ’90s and he’s one of the last filmmakers left that’s his own brand. But is he great? That’s what we debate while cutting through the hero worship and the haterade. Political Beliefs of the Greatest Superheroes

In this one, we try to determine the “Political Beliefs of The Greatest Superheroes” using the text and subtext of their comic book and movie depictions. We come to some pretty funny conclusions without getting too galaxy-brained and certainly not too serious. Thinking of them as real people is absurd enough but imagining what each of them actually STAND FOR makes this a thought experiment that examines the politics of the entire genre. This is a sumptuous banquet of takes, dig in.

The internet can bring so many people together but it also thrives on conflict and to a great degree exists to gather data so that companies can sell us stuff. So, in this episode, we examine what has become the misinformation superhighway and discuss whether the internet has done more harm than good.

The Greatest Thing About Comic Books

This one is Ed and Producer Bill talking one on one about sequential art and trying to determine “The Greatest Thing About Comics.”  I won’t say we even got close saying everything that is to be said but we did have a great chat about what separates comics from movies, plays, and novels.  We talked at length about the things comics do better than any other medium and we tripped down memory lane describing the comics we think are seminal. Our list is by no means complete or egalitarian.  There are holes in our or anybody’s expertise but this conversation is great for somebody wondering why comic book storytelling recently took over the world.

Is Stephen King the Greatest

This week we welcome Robert J. Peterson, author of The Odds, and a new horror novel called Strong Bones. He has come to talk about how novels are the greatest and how Stephen King might be its greatest modern practitioner. We talk about the author’s faults as well as his virtues and we have a good time making lists of our favorite works. Some of our choices are truly against the grain. Then, in the second half of the episode, we shift gears and lay down a pretty strong primer on how to write a novel from scratch including how to use beta readers to check you on your bullshit. Many questions are tackled including, what does it take to wrangle those myriad thoughts, characters, and plotlines into some semblance of order? This is a must-listen for fledgling writers and creatives.
