But what if one was tasked with vetting the best three-person Suicide Squad to finally take out the Bat? That’s where The Greatest Pod comes in to discuss and debate our “Greatest Batman Villains.” In the end, we’ll field two teams and explain our plans to kill the Dark Knight.

Like cartoons or comic books, nearly everyone has memories of seeing the superstars of pro wrestling, especially children of the ’80s and ’90s. What makes some people stay invested in certain mythic figures in spandex like Spider-Man and Batman while simultaneously thinking of wrestling as “for kids”? Pro wrestling combines our love of sports, theater, and soap opera into a branding machine with a pop culture allure that waxes and wanes but never truly dies. We present a pod that asks, “Is Stanley Kubrick The Greatest?” Producer Bill, Ed Greer, and Ron Swallow discuss the merits of one of the most influential film directors of all time. There’s plenty of over-analysis of his films and his genius but in this conversation, we try to determine why his movies had such an effect on us in specific. Producer Bill is an especially big fan and thinks Kubrick may have directed the best movie in about 6 genres. Regardless, Kubrick is a rubric, in that the study of his films is almost de rigueur for anyone trying to talk about film in the 20th century. So does that make him the greatest? Let’s discuss.

This one is a real commute killer as Ed Greer and special guest Billy Business find themselves asking, “Will DC be The Greatest?” Now obviously no one sane is actually rooting for any of the corporations vying for our collective attention (unless you work for one) but the superhero-sphere is undeniably more interesting when DC is doing great stuff. They are presently carving out a strong position as the “mature” version of the mythic power fantasies rocking the large and small screens these days. “Are Critics The Greatest?” Of course not, but also, sometimes, yes. We have writer, podcaster, and Twitter giant Lon Harris on to discuss the value of film criticism in the modern age. This one is a fun debate as we examine where we get our criticism and film opinion from and what role we expect film criticism to serve now. Most people say they know what they like and need no help deciding what to watch but then why are Rotten Tomatoes scores all over every movie advertisement? With so many entertainment options vying for our attention and time, maybe finding film opinions you can trust is more important than ever. But also maybe we need to move beyond the simple binary idea of “Good and Bad” and embrace developing a more adventurous entertainment palette. Much food for thought in this ep. “Are Sequels The Greatest?” It’s of course a loaded question. Most sequels cost more and are worse than the original version. In this one, we discuss sequels and movie series as strictly artistic endeavors. Would some movies with multiple sequels be better with one? Or none? Which movie series would be better as two solid movies? Or as a TV series? All of these thoughts are explored and in the last segment, we pitch an 80’s movie nostalgia bomb sequel that would destroy at the box office. Happy New Year!

THIS CONTAINS NO TALK ABOUT NO WAY HOME. That spoiler review will be on our Patreon and boy is it a humdinger. So what’s THIS particular pod about? It was taped before Ed had seen No Way Home with Ron holding his tongue like a champ. He seriously spilled nothing. Truly admirable. “So what is it about??!!” you may ask, this time more insistently. Well, we try to take Spider-Man as a character and discern just what is “The Greatest Spider-Man.” He’s been many things to many people and he’s even been many people at this point, so we try to drill down on what exactly makes for a GREAT depiction of Spider-Man. What basic structure and story conventions are present? What is a “violation” of the basic things that make Spider-Man cool and relatable? When it comes to who’s responsible for a comic book’s success, who is “The Greatest: Writers or Artists?” It’s an age-old debate and one we don’t resolve on this broadcast but I do think we make some salient points about how necessary each of their contributions are. Each tribe has certain limitations and only through their combined powers do we get the best stuff. There’s some discussion of the “comic book auteur” as well and how these rare cartoonists who can truly do both jobs well are less plentiful than we think, thus deserving of all the accolades they get. But when it comes to work-for-hire comics created by teams placed together under editorial direction there needs to be some sort of revision of credits when these things are adapted into television and movies. As we note in this conversation there’s no morally defensible reason Matt Fraction got a producer credit on the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus while the artist David Aja didn’t.
