“Are Comic Books The Greatest Conservative Artform?” If this question is shocking to you in any way oh boy is this the podcast for you. Producer Bill and I apply The Overton Window (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window) to mainstream comics and TV. We discuss everything from big 2 comics to Star Trek through the lens of The Overton Window in an attempt to see just how "right" or "left" wing your favorite comics and TV are.
We DO NOT talk about the most recent horrific events or about gun control but you could see how we could have because that stuff fits right in the frame of The Overton Window. This one has some real soul searching, and I even have a long overdue epiphany about my own lasting love for The Punisher. I think this one is special and the only "good thing" to come out of Ron being out of commission the last week or so due to getting The 'Rona.

This is an instant classic. “Batman or Spider-Man, Who Is The Greatest?” To Ed, Ron, and Bill this is no run-of-the-mill “Who would win” argument. They leave that to the comic book mouth breathers to litigate on Twitter ad nauseam. No, this is a nuanced conversation about the flagship characters of Big 2 comics. These two are basically the top two examples of the modern superhero. As Bill states in the episode, this isn’t just Batman vs. Spider-Man this is a conversation about which of these characters is the greatest superhero concept OF ALL TIME.

We have to be kidding right? “The Greatest Toxic Fandoms?” Who would ask a question like that? Well, we would. And the answer is pretty funny. Ed, Ron, and Bill talk about the fan bases they personally dislike the most. While that’s a good time, the conversation morphs into an (almost) scientific breakdown of which fandoms suck the hardest. All the usual suspects pop up, Star Wars, Marvel, The Celtics, etc. This is some of our most incisive work yet. It will ruffle some feathers. At some point in this podcast, we will offend you. We will say that some of the people who like what you like are liking it to a degree and in a way that makes them bad. This week we ask the acerbically funny Brodie Reed of the Dark Weeb podcast, “Is Tokusatsu The Greatest?” Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, etc.; these Japanese TV shows either came overdubbed or became the Voltrons and Power Rangers of our youth when they were adapted for American audiences. To this day many fans unabashedly love these tokusatsu shows with the same verve as many of our listeners do superhero stories. This one is a real education as Brodie breaks down the enduring appeal of these culturally specific gems of action film and television.

“Are Mythic Stories The Greatest Lost Art?” Ed, Ron, and Producer Bill discuss how mythic storytelling has been a part of human nature since our beginnings as a species. However, it seems like we’re losing that primal yarn spinning ability. Has our obsession with “sensible world-building” and “tight plots” destroyed our sense of awe and mystery? In this excellent conversation we try to get to the root of what qualifies as mythic storytelling in our modern age, which modern stories in our opinion have “that mythic quality”, and why is it such a hard tone to capture? Hercules, Anansi, Batman, Star Wars, The Northman, Conan, The Neverending Story and many more stories are dissected in an effort to understand why mythic storytelling is such a rapidly vanishing aspect of our storytelling lineage. Don’t worry, it's funny too!

DC Animation Director Sam Liu has an astonishing list of credits but remains one of the most humble people we’ve ever had on the pod. Sam regales us with tales of working in comics near the end of “The Image Era”, and at Sony Animation when they were just getting started. He’s also worked with super producers like Bruce Timm of Batman The Animated Series as well as some of the greatest character designers, storyboard artists, and voice actors in the world. This one isn’t so much celebrating one particular work or character as “The Greatest something or other.” Instead, we examine the challenges of doing “feature” animation on a TV budget and excelling as a professional artist even when you don’t REALLY love drawing. Sam’s is a story of getting in where you fit and excelling as the leader of a team. His illustrious career shows us the ephemeral, transitive nature of childhood dreams, and how maturing can alter your perception of what connotes success.
